There have been a few articles floating around the interwebs about the ending of the film "Remember Me", which I had no desire to see (I will see nothing with Robert Pattinson in it unless he can prove that he can wash his hair just once no matter how awesome Emilie de Ravin is) so I was not put off by the warnings about spoilers.
To discuss the ending I obviously have to ruin it for you and since the filmmakers have spent a large amount of effort not having it ruined you may want to stop reading now if you want to go see it.
If you don't mind having the ending of the movie spoiled keep reading after the jump. If you don't want to know the ending click here for kittens.
The ending, according to several blogs is this. The film is not set in the present day as you are appently lead to believe but set in 2001 and Pattinson actually dies on 9/11. According to this article he "looks out the window, and watches helplessly as American Airlines Flight 11 hits the building".
As I said I wasn't going to see the film nor does this information make me more or less likely to go and see it but I have a question. Is 9/11 something that we should be surprising people with? If you were in the cinema how would you react to that ending? I'd especially like to hear from people who saw it and whether they were effected by it.

While I think its in bad taste, I can see it from a Making Lemonade out of Lemons point of view. Sure, lots of people died in 9/11, but one of them was this terrible actor. So it wasn't all bad.
But yeah, there shouldn't be a need to reference 9/11. There are any number of other ways to kill off a character and make it be a surprise random thing.
For the record, I didn't see Remember Me. Wasn't planning on it. And still am not planning on it after hearing the ending.
Apparently in the original script the brother who suicided in the final version died in the first WTC bombing.
But your right Pattinson dying on 9/11 would be awesome.
Leyton Hewitt was nearly on one of the planes that crashed so there's the real tragedy.
I don't know fucking Erica douchebag spammers and I don't read Japanese!
Just saw it. Left the theatre over an hour ago and Im still in a state of shock. It was SO well done.
I dont thik it was "too much". It wasnt just a matter of killing off a character. The point you are to take away is seize the day because you never know what tomorrow brings, and while it might sound cliche, it was done so well that it didnt seem cliche at all (until I tried to articulate it here). If he was gunned down or something
To elaborate on the spoiler and try to explain the effect it had, We're paying so much attention to the happenings of Tyeler (Pattinson)'s life; love, loss, family... Just as we realize for the first time in the movie what date it is and the significance of it, they cut to his face looking out the window of his dad's office. They pan out so we can see that he's actually in one of the towers (until now, no specific building was mentioned). We never actually see a plane or hear it coming or anything, but the implication is clear. Fades to black and cuts to the aftermath, the horrified family and friends as they realize where Tyler is and what happened.
Im not sure using a fictional or different means of killing Tyler would have the same effect.
Thanks for your comment, that makes a lot of sense.
